ROMP on TV

Posted on | July 17, 2009 | No Comments

did you catch the Today Show this week? if not, you missed our big TV debut!

it’s so odd to see rompstore.com sitting there in that odd font, but I must admit it’s a bit of a thrill!

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

equally as thrilling as having this happen is that fact that I managed to get it to load on the blog! yippee!

rainy days

Posted on | July 14, 2009 | No Comments

the dreary, nearly record-setting rains of the last month were good for at least one thing – work! almost 4 years to the day after opening ROMP in brooklyn, TWINE was launched! hurrah!

one of the few sunny days in June was a great excuse to escape the computer and head over to our local organic strawberry farm. what a yummy treat!

herewith, some snaps of the adventure:

and a couple of sites from along the way. coincidentally, both housed stores. . . they could scarcely be more different and though I can imagine myself keeping shop in either building, for now it’s still online only for us!

a stroll

Posted on | June 9, 2009 | No Comments

two places I plan to take nice long strolls this summer.
1) the brand newly opened and star-studded highline in NYC.

the crowds will be nuts, but it sounds amazingly worth it. photos via friends of the high line & the nytimes. read all about it here.

2) the new maya lin piece at storm king, an amazing outdoor sculpture park here in the hudson valley.

storm king is truly magical and worth a visit at anytime of year. here’s a few pix of my very favorite piece there, andy goldsworthy’s wall.

kittens!

Posted on | June 5, 2009 | No Comments

this bundle of feline fun has moved into my house! fern & mouse (l to r)
kitties_460
a little over a week ago, I had to put my beloved 16 year old cat, toronto, to sleep. after a few sad days, O & I decided to do a good deed and take his special Rx food to the local spca.

we knew we’d get cats again – maybe in the fall? – but our quick peek at the kitties turned into 4(!) hours and we ended up bringing these two home – they’re fast, goofy, snuggly and beautiful. we’re in love.

daniel michalik

Posted on | May 21, 2009 | No Comments

earlier in the week I was at some of my favorite shows of the year – ICFF and the increasingly great Stationary Show. Lots of new goods I scored there will be arriving soon!

one of the highlights at ICFF was meeting Daniel Michalik, with whom I’ve been exchanging emails for about 4 years. he’s pioneered an amazing technique for casting and machining granulated cork into beautiful furniture and products – here are a few pix from his site, but his current work is even cooler (think color!).

a few of his pieces will be joining the mix at ROMP and our new store, TWINE very soon. we can’t wait!

hobo(ken)

Posted on | May 13, 2009 | No Comments

years ago I had a desk calendar with a variety of signs and symbols on the back of each month. the best one was these hobo symbols. aren’t they amazing!? can’t decide if my favorite is ‘religious talk gets free meal’ or ‘kind woman tells sad story’
hobosigns1
the other day, while wearing too big clothes from the dress-up bin and her dad’s hat, Oona caught site of herself in a mirror and said, “mommy, look at me! I look like a hoboken!” as a former Jersey girl myself, this is one of my favorite utterances ever. . .

jill of all trades

Posted on | April 28, 2009 | No Comments

though my biz is pretty much me, I’ve been blessed to have talented, smart and creative women around to help me.

currently, it’s Jill who makes it possible for me to chaperone field trips, do yoga mid-day and head to NYC for trade shows, new niece visits, etc.

Jill’s a super-talented fiber artist who hand-spins yarn like these beauties. her penchant for bright colors must be part of the reason we like each other.

jill_460

marichelle of heart handmade did a lovely post about Jill a little while back. see more of her yarn, other work and some great process pix here. I love the names she gives the yarns too – like finches and firs, minty, spring equinox, forestry, l.a. freeway and 1976.

crayon stones have dominated our lives lately, maybe that’s why I’m loving these fab rings from brooklyn’s the future perfect

2 things

Posted on | April 5, 2009 | No Comments

2 things I love about owning my own business:

1. the wonderful people I encounter in doing this, like april, who sent a 5 paragraph email with this photo of her son isaiah’s creation using our crayon stones. they’ve been impossible to keep in stock and shockingly popular since they were featured in this month’s cookie!
april_460

and # 2, being able to take time away to witness my sister’s labor and the birth of her new daughter! one of the best moments of my life! (that’s me – beaming! – on the right).
